New DNA Analysis Shows Ancient Humans Interbred with Denisovans

Tens of thousands of years ago modern humans crossed paths with the group of hominins known as the Neandertals. Researchers now think they also met another, less-known group called the Denisovans. The only trace that we have found, however, is a single finger bone and two teeth, but those fragments have been enough to cradle wisps of Denisovan DNA across thousands of years inside a Siberian cave. Now a team of scientists has been able to reconstruct their entire genome from these meager fragments. The analysis adds new twists to prevailing notions about archaic human history.

"Denisova is a big surprise," says John Hawks, a biological anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin?Madison who was not involved in the new research. On its own, a simple finger bone in a cave would have been assumed to belong to a human, Neandertal or other hominin. But when researchers first sequenced a small section of DNA in 2010?a section that covered about 1.9 percent of the genome?they were able to tell that the specimen was neither. "It was the first time a new group of distinct humans was discovered" via genetic analysis rather than by anatomical description, said Svante P??bo, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute (M.P.I.) for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, in a conference call with reporters.

Now P??bo and his colleagues have devised a new method of genetic analysis that allowed them to reconstruct the entire Denisovan genome with nearly all of the genome sequenced approximately 30 times over akin to what we can do for modern humans. Within this genome, researchers have found clues into not only this group of mysterious hominins, but also our own evolutionary past. Denisovans appear to have been more closely related to Neandertals than to humans, but the evidence also suggests that Denisovans and humans interbred. The new analysis also suggests new ways that early humans may have spread across the globe. The findings were published online August 30 in Science.

Who were the Denisovans?
Unfortunately, the Denisovan genome doesn't provide many more clues about what this hominin looked like than a pinky bone does. The researchers will only conclude that Denisovans likely had dark skin. They also note that there are alleles "consistent" with those known to call for brown hair and brown eyes. Other than that, they cannot say.

Yet the new genetic analysis does support the hypothesis that Neandertals and Denisovans were more closely related to one another than either was to modern humans. The analysis suggests that the modern human line diverged from what would become the Denisovan line as long as 700,000 years ago?but possibly as recently as 170,000 years ago.

Denisovans also interbred with ancient modern humans, according to P??bo and his team. Even though the sole fossil specimen was found in the mountains of Siberia, contemporary humans from Melanesia (a region in the South Pacific) seem to be the most likely to harbor Denisovan DNA. The researchers estimate that some 6 percent of contemporary Papuans' genomes come from Denisovans. Australian aborigines and those from Southeast Asian islands also have traces of Denisovan DNA. This suggests that the two groups might have crossed paths in central Asia and then the modern humans continued on to colonize the islands of Oceania.

Yet contemporary residents of mainland Asia do not seem to posses Denisovian traces in their DNA, a "very curious" fact, Hawks says. "We're looking at a very interesting population scenario"?one that does not jibe entirely with what we thought we knew about how waves modern human populations migrated into and through Asia and out to Oceania's islands. This new genetic evidence might indicate that perhaps an early wave of humans moved through Asia, mixed with Denisovans and then relocated to the islands?to be replaced in Asia by later waves of human migrants from Africa. "It's not totally obvious that that works really well with what we know about the diversity of Asians and Australians," Hawks says. But further genetic analysis and study should help to clarify these early migrations.

Just as with modern Homo sapiens, the genome of a single individual cannot tell us exactly what genes and traits are specific to all Denisovans. Yet, just one genome can reveal the genetic diversity of an entire population. Each of our genomes contains information about generations far beyond those of our parents and grandparents, said David Reich, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology?Harvard University Broad Institute and a co-author on the paper. Scientists can compare and contrast the set of genes on each chromosome?passed down from each parent?and extrapolate this process back through the generations. "You contain a multitude of ancestors within you," Reich said, borrowing from Walt Whitman.

The new research reveals that the Denisovans had low genetic diversity?just 26 to 33 percent of the genetic diversity of contemporary European or Asian populations. And for the Denisovans, the population on the whole seems to have been very small for hundreds of thousands of years, with relatively little genetic diversity throughout their history.

Curiously, the researchers noted in their paper, the Denisovan population shows "a drastic decline in size at the time when the modern human population began to expand."

Why were modern humans so successful whereas Denisovans (and Neandertals) went extinct? P??bo and his co-authors could not resist looking into the genetic factors that might be at work. Some of the key differences, they note, center around brain development and synaptic connectivity. "It makes sense that what pops up is connectivity in the brain," P??bo noted. Neandertals had a similar brain size?to-body ratio as we do, so rather than cranial capacity, it might have been underlying neurological differences that could explain why we flourished while they died out, he said.

Hawks counters that it might be a little early to begin drawing conclusions about human brain evolution from genetic comparisons with archaic relatives. Decoding the genetic map of the brain and cognition from a genome is still a long way off, he notes?unraveling skin color is still difficult enough given our current technologies and knowledge.

New sequencing for old DNA
The Denisovan results rely on a new method of genetic analysis developed by paper co-author Matthias Meyer, also of M.P.I. The procedure allows the researchers to sequence the full genome by using single strands of genetic material rather than the typical double strands required. The technique, which they are calling a single-stranded library preparation, involves stripping the genetic material down to individual strands to copy and avoids a purification step, which can lose precious genetic material.

The finger bone?just one disklike phalanx?is so small that it does not contain enough usable carbon for dating, the researchers note. But by counting the number of genetic mutations in a genome and comparing them with other living relatives, such as modern humans and chimpanzees, given assumed rates of mutations since breaking with a last common ancestor, "for the first time you can try to estimate this number into a date and provide molecular dating of the fossil," Meyer said. With the new resolution, the researchers estimate the age of the bone to 74,000 to 82,000 years ago. But that is a wide window, and previous archaeological estimates for the bone are a bit younger, ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 years old. These genetic estimations are also still in limbo because of ongoing debate about the average rate of genetic mutations over time, which could skew the age. "Nevertheless," the researchers noted in their paper, "the results suggest that in the future it will be possible to determine dates of fossils based on genome sequences."

This new sequencing approach can be used for any DNA that is too fragmented to be read well through more traditional methods. Meyer noted that it could come in handy for analysis of both ancient DNA and contemporary forensic evidence, which also often contains only fragments of genetic material.

Hawks is excited about the new sequencing technology. It is also helpful to have a technology developed specifically for the evolutionary field, he notes. "We're always using the new techniques from other fields, and this is a case where the new technique is developed just for this."

Hawks himself has heard from the researchers that have worked with the Denisovan samples that "the Denisovan pinky is just extraordinary" in terms of the amount of DNA preserved in it. Most bone fragments would be expected to contain less than 5 percent of the individual's endogenous DNA, but this fortuitous finger had a surprising 70 percent, the researchers noted in the study. And many Neandertal fragments have been preserved in vastly different states?many are far worse off than this Denisovan finger bone.

The new sequencing approach could also improve our understanding of known specimens and the evolutionary landscape as a whole. "It's going to increase the yield from other fossils," Hawks notes. Many of the Neandertal specimens, for example, have only a small fraction of their genome sequenced. "If we can go from 2 percent to the whole genome, that opens up a lot more," Hawks says. "Going back further in time will be exciting," he notes, and this new technique should allow us to do that. "There's a huge race on?it's exciting."

The Denisovans might be the first non-Neandertal archaic human to be sequenced, but they are likely not going to be the last. The researchers behind this new study are already at work using the new single-strand sequencing technique to reexamine older specimens. (Meyer said they were working on reassessing old samples but would not specify which specimens they were studying?the mysterious "hobbit" H. floresiensis would be a worthy candidate.) P??bo suggests Asia as a particularly promising location to look for other Denisovan-like groups. "I would be surprised if there were not other groups to be found there in the future," he said.

Taking this technique to specimens from Africa is also likely to yield some exciting results, Hawks says. Africa, with its rich human evolutionary history, holds the greatest genetic diversity. The genomes of contemporary pygmy and hunter?gatherer tribes in Africa, for example, have roughly as many differences as do those of European modern humans and Neandertals. So "any ancient specimen that we find in Africa might be as different from us as Neandertals," Hawks says. "Anything we find from the right place might be another Denisovan."

Genetic test to identify wildcats

With claims big cats are stalking the countryside, researchers are developing a DNA test to identify Scotland's pure-bred wildcats.

There have been questions whether sightings of "big cats" might be wildcats or feral domestic cats.

But researchers at the University of Chester want to find a gene test to distinguish wildcats from hybrids cross-bred with domestic cats.

The study wants to protect the pure-bred wildcats from extinction.

Geneticists at the university want to find a DNA test to define whether a cat is a pure-bred wildcat, which can be up to 4ft (1.22m) long.

'The last stand'

Senior lecturer in biology, Paul O'Donoghue, believes there might be fewer than 100 Scottish wildcats surviving in the wild - with their future threatened by inter-breeding with runaway domestic cats.

"This is the last stand of a bit of wilderness," said Dr O'Donoghue.

The Scottish wildcat was now much rarer than the black rhino, he said.

Sightings of these animals, much bigger and stockier than domestic cats, were becoming less frequent - and a breeding programme was urgently needed to prevent them from completely disappearing, Dr O'Donoghue added.

Dr O'Donoghue has been working with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to try to establish how many pure wildcats still exist, either in captivity or the wild.

The DNA samples used to identify a "true" wildcat include a Victorian specimen kept in the British Museum - providing a sample with 63,000 genetic markers.

Dr O'Donoghue says that these 19th Century wildcats show the size and power of this species - saying that they were as different from a domestic cat as a wolf from a dog.

There have been repeated claims of sightings of "big cats" in the UK - with summer headlines made this week by claims a lion had been spotted in Essex.

Stephen Harris, professor of environmental sciences at Bristol University, suggested that rather than escaped big cats or wildcats, the creatures being spotted might be domestic cats that have gone feral.

Prof Harris told BBC Radio 4's Today programme feral cats could grow to be "surprisingly large".

"There are some quite big feral cats out there," he said.

In Australia, Prof Harris said, there had been feral cats shot weighing 40lbs (18kgs) and 5ft 9in (1.7m) long.

Dr O'Donoghue said the "Essex lion", which had been described as tawny, could not be a wildcat, which had grey and black stripes.

The precarious rarity of wildcats might also count against the likelihood of such a sighting - and Dr O'Donoghue says "time is rapidly running out for them".

He says he wants the research to help prevent "one of Britain's most incredible, iconic animals from disappearing from the face of the earth".

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 8 troops

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Taliban militants attacked a Pakistani army post near the Afghan border before dawn Wednesday, killing eight soldiers, a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, said a military official. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the eight soldiers killed, six others were wounded in the attack near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The attack started around midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The attack followed the start of a new army operation to rout militants from the area, said the official. During the operation over the last two days, soldiers killed 18 militants and destroyed seven of their hideouts. Another 21 militants were wounded, according to the official.

The official initially said nine soldiers were killed but later lowered the toll to eight.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the post. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.

Chinese scientists successfully crack the genome of diploid cotton

Chinese scientists successfully crack the genome of diploid cotton [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Aug-2012

BGI Shenzhen

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics

August 28, 2012, Shenzhen, China The international research team led by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and BGI have completed the genome sequence and analysis of a diploid cotton-- Gossypium raimondii. The cotton genome provides an invaluable resource for the study and genetic improvement of cotton quality and output, and sheds new lights on understanding the genetic characteristics and evolutionary mechanism underlying cotton and its close relatives. The study was published online in Nature Genetics. (http://www.nature.com/ng/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/ng.2371.html).

Cotton, also known as "white gold", is an important cash crop worldwide. Its fiber is one of the oldest fibers under human cultivation, which traces over 7,000 years old recovered from archaeological sites. The cotton production provides income for approximately 100 million families, and approximately 150 countries are involved in cotton import and export. Additionally, in scientific research, cotton also serves as an excellent model system for studying polyploidization, cell elongation and cell wall biosynthesis.

In this study, researchers sequenced the genome of G. raimondii by the next-generation sequencing technology, yielding a draft cotton genome with 103.6-fold genome coverage. Over 73% of the assembled sequences were anchored on 13 G. raimondii chromosomes. They identified 2,355 syntenic blocks in the G. raimondii genome, and found that approximately 40% of the paralogous genes were present in more than 1 block, which suggests that this cotton genome has undergone substantial chromosome rearrangement during its evolution.

Through comprehensive comparison and analysis, researchers observed that one paleohexaploidization event occurred in the G. raimondii genome at approximately 130.8 million years ago, while the event is commonly found in eudicots. They also found the evidence to support a cottonspecific wholegenome duplication event occurred at approximately 13-20 million years ago.

Cotton is known to produce a unique group of terpenoids such as gossypol. The accumulated gossypol and related sesquiterpenoids produced by cotton in pigment glands can be as a resistance against pathogens and herbivores. The majority of cotton sesquiterpenoids are derived from a common precursor which is synthesized by (+)- ? -cadinene synthase (CDN) in gossypol biosynthesis. Through the phylogenetic analysis on G. raimondii and eight other sequenced plant genomes, they found that the cotton, and probably Theobroma cacao, were the only sequenced plant species that possess an authentic CDN1 gene family for gossypol biosynthesis.

Furthermore, the transcriptomic comparison between the fiber-bearing G. hirsutum and the non-fibered G. raimondii demonstrated that three synthases are important for cotton fiber development, including sucrose synthase (Sus), 3-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (KCS) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO). Meanwhile, the MYB and bHLH transcription factors preferentially expressed in fiber may be useful to explain the molecular mechanisms that are in charge of governing fiber initiation and early cell growth.

Zhiwen Wang, Project Manager at BGI, said, "The completed G. raimondii genome provides a good reference for accelerating the genomic research on tetraploid cotton species such as G. hirsutum and G. barbadense. It also will lay a solid foundation for researchers to further boost cotton quality and productivity by comprehensively exploring the genetic mechanisms underlying cotton fiber initiation, gossypol biosynthesis and resistance against pathogens and herbivores."

Cutting Tools as a powerful tool for Concrete

Man continues to be having difficulties to discover simple methods for reducing various tough materials particularly concrete, quite a traditional development but even there are no effective tangible cutting equipment designed up to now.

These power tools are commonly referred to as Concrete breaking equipment and they also are extremely important. There's a different number of Concrete breaking equipment to incorporate simple labor-intensive their hands about the huge equipment which are solely ideal for the function. This Concrete cutting equipment are now being viewed as the most effective device cutting tools such as clay-based pavers, brick, or several other types of concretes based in the world industry. Furthermore, Concrete breaking equipment are thought tools, you might want to ensure your health care insurance is effective before you begin by using this tool. You can easily use Concrete breaking equipment to separate the places you desire to fix and then leave those other entire driveway on your own.

Primarily all of the Concrete cutting equipment has durable cutting blades, these diamond cutting blades can certainly reduce the most difficult and also the ticker materials when thrown on. Of those Concrete breaking equipment, the diamond cutting blades are now being thought to be the best and price cutting blades as well. In fact, the Concrete breaking equipment is mainly used to eliminate the extra and unnecessary concrete materials that have been relatively traditional as appropriately. This type of heavy duty Concrete breaking equipment may be used to spend fewer lives in the event of another disaster like Chile's recent. The choices of which type of Concrete breaking tools depend on the types of projects you plan to do. There are a various number of Concrete breaking tools including easy labor-intensive tools on the massive equipment which are exclusively designed for the reason.

Those persons who are getting work done in the concrete industry day in and day out know perfectly about using these Concrete cutting equipment as well as the flexibility of diamond blade and for selecting the best cutting blades used to give standard and contemporary designer appearance. In keeping with home development, you may even want to get Concrete breaking equipment in the event you require reducing your concrete wall to create one more room. In the event you truly looking for Concrete breaking equipment, then first look for to employ these power tools because they are frequently really expensive as compare with other conventional equipment primarily for the purpose that of their nature. Therefore, you'll find countless uses of Concrete breaking equipment and with no suitable equipment; it might be obviously difficult to construct incredible concrete design frameworks. Consequently, it's now apparent that the best choice Concrete cutting equipment are very first fixed to after which in the event you imply to consider out footpath, it may be concluded by using sledge hammer or possibly some carving device.

I'M A SONIC BOOMER: New or old life?

As we wandered around the golf course, talking about life, one of my friends started talking about coping with life after the death of a spouse.? Most of my friends have been in long term relationships (over 40 plus years) with their partners and as we age the loss of a life partner is a serious issue for us.? My friends realized that?I had to consider this possibility when my wife was ? ?sick few years ago, and were thus interested in my views on the topic.

One friend said," I don't know what I would do."?

"After the mourning you would have a new life", one of my other friends suggested

?"I don't, know if I would because I would still have my old life" ?he replied.?As we continued to? play golf, we talked about the issue of trying to reconnect to our old selves.

Our golf course wisdom after about 9 holes, ?was that after 40 plus years in a relationship a person really were not sure who they really are or want to be because for most of their life, they have been in a partnership and as such the person did not look at life as an individual might.?That sense of unease of being uncoupled and the sense of loss would?unsettle the journey to find one's self.?

One of my friends went on, "I would still have the same people who depend on me, I would still have the same issues at work,?My own personal demons would still be there, but now I would have to fight them on my own. How would I know?it is time to move on, sell my home and move on and start a new relationship."?

We were not able to answer that question but?as?friends we just listened, pretended to think and tried to look wise, and soon the conversation drifted back to?the latest shot and how beautiful the day was--(my friends and I look at life's serious issues, but only for very short periods of time,as I think do most men of my age :-).?

The conversation got me thinking about change and renewal after the loss of a spouse.?Change is hard and coping with life after the loss of a loved one of many years is not easy. After 30 to 40 years in a relationship, how does one start the process of reconnecting with yourself as a single? ?For those of us ?in long term relationships we have for 30 years or more have not considered ourselves as a separate entity, our life has been intertwined with another.

Joan P. Hubbard, is the author of The Grieving Self and she?believes that those who can reconnect and reconstruct their independent self after severe loss will experience emotional healing more quickly and begin a new path toward a viable life. In her forward Hubbard writes, ?Grief is a journey most of us are destined to take. We will experience grief at a loss of our physical parts or the abilities of our bodies to perform, the loss of important relationships (family and friends) through death or attrition, loss of jobs and opportunities?loss of some aspect of what we know to be our self.?

The Grieving Process consists of five steps:
1) Denial
This first step is when we try to deny the death of our loved one, or in this case, our spouse.
2) Anger
You'll probably be angry at your spouse for dying and leaving you. Or, you'll be mad at "the world" because it happened.
3) Bargaining
Bargaining usually is tried with God, or another spiritual being. You may ask what you can do to reverse the loss of your husband or wife.
4) Depression or Sadness
This step of the Grieving Process is self-explanatory. Besides feeling depressed or sad, you may still feel angry.
5) Acceptance
When you've reached this level, you will have accepted the fact that your spouse has died. The feelings of anger and sadness that you've had have begun to ease up.

Here's a tip to help you decide when you are ready to move on, after your spouse dies: if you don't complete these five steps first, you won't be ready. Easy to say, tough to remember if you are in mourning.

You can't start reconnecting to yourself and begin a new life while you're still grieving for your late spouse. Mourning will interfere with beginning any?healthy, happy relationships.?Mourning is not measured in time, nor is it a sequential journey. Once the mourning has finished then the work or reconnecting can begin. Part of the process of finding a new life, is the discarding of the old, very hard to let go for most.?

Friends are important in the process and true friends will allow for the trial and error that happens as we try to see where we now fit. As we move toward finding out who we now are, we may go through some interesting and (to our friends) strange journeys. I believe that in this journey we will make mistakes, but the journey, the mistakes,?are needed to find our balance.?

U.S. should make 'lifelong homes' a priority, says Cisneros | New ...

27th August 2012 ????? 0 Comments

By Judith Graham
Contributing Writer

(Special from Kaiser Health News) ? What will it take for Americans to age successfully in place, rather than have to bounce from home to assisted living to nursing home and so on? This question has immediate importance for policymakers and families as an estimated 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day.

It?s the subject of a new book, Independent for Life: Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging America, (University of Texas Press) authored by more than a dozen leading experts in aging and housing and co-edited by Henry Cisneros, a four-term mayor of San Antonio and former of the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Cisneros, who now runs a company specializing in urban real estate, spent an hour discussing his thoughts about aging in place with Kaiser News Service reporter Judith Graham. That interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Q: You start this book talking about your elderly mother. Tell me about her.

Henry Cisneros: My Mom and Dad bought the home across the alley from her mother?s home in 1945. It was a lower-middle-class neighborhood of civil service workers?all Latinos. It had the feeling of a Norman Rockwell picture, only all the faces were brown.

My Dad passed away in 2006 at age 89, having had a stroke some years before. But my Mom, 87, lives there still. The house is essentially the same as it was, with some adjustments. We put a ramp on the side of the house leading to a deck. We raised the toilet, lowered the sinks, created a walk-in shower. Changed the lighting in the den so my Dad could read. Put in window guards, an alarm and outdoor lighting for my Mom because the neighborhood is somewhat in decline.

Q. Do you see her often?

Henry Cisneros: I try to visit her about every second or third day, but I talk to her every day by phone. She is a classic case of a person aging in place. She?s a healthy, lanky, tall woman who?s always been physically strong. But in recent years she?s started to slow down. She manages all her own affairs. I don?t think there?s a tractor strong enough to pull her from that house.

Until recently, on three sides, all her neighbors were her age or older. The lady to the left died this year at 97. The lady to the right went to a nursing home and died in her late 80s. And the lady across the street died at 90-plus. All stayed in their homes until very late. Aging in place in that neighborhood means older women living on their own.

Q. What lessons do you take from your mom?s experience?

H.C.: Seniors fear being unable to communicate, being lonely, feeling insecure. Especially people who all their lives have had other people around them?family, neighbors?and now they go entire days and never see anybody.

Imagine being older, a step slower, a bit more fragile. Add to that being lonely, edging to depression and unsure about how you?re going to get everything done that you used to do?but wanting above all to stay in your own home and keep on being independent. That?s hard.

Q. What kinds of policies do you think are needed?

H.C.: First, I?d like to see us commit as a nation to creating lifelong homes. Only four percent of the 65-plus population goes to a nursing home. Most are at home for a long, long time. We should make this a priority, just as we did with creating more energy-efficient homes.

This could involve certifying a package of age-related home improvements?the kinds of things we did for my parents?and coming up with public and private strategies for financial support.

Second, we ought to be thinking about how we accessorize communities for an aging population. Today, we build parks for children. Imagine a park where older people would have stations for exercise. Think about age-appropriate recreation facilities. Think about how we make transit available, so people who no longer drive can get to the doctor.

As we build new communities we should focus on walkability?making sure that older people can walk to facilities they need, like groceries and pharmacies.

Q. Can you point to examples?

H.C.: There are communities that are now rethinking zoning policies so that granny flats can be built on the same lots as larger size homes. Davis, Calif., has rethought its zoning codes with that in mind.

There are places using the high school library as the community library. So, elderly people can work there or volunteer there and interface with the next generation.

I think we?ll be recycling older communities in many parts of the U.S.?clearing away obsolete buildings and reconfiguring them as elderly housing. The recession has created a lot of sites that are no longer economically viable. Strip centers, even regional malls are being remade with housing for the elderly in mind.

We also need to generate prototypes for new age-appropriate homes for people who are leaving McMansions and looking for a smaller home.

Q. What about affordable housing?

H.C.: We need to double down on very successful programs that have produced affordable housing for the elderly. Low-income housing tax credits?we need more. And HUD?s Section 202 (supportive housing for the elderly) program?we need more of that. In some respects, this is the least problematic area because we know what to do?we just need to do more of it.

What we don?t know how to do very well is help people who are middle-class, but who are about to fall off the dual cliff of aging and frailty while living on fixed incomes and aging in place.

Q. Yet, this is an era of budget cuts. How do you make the case for more financial assistance for programs of this kind?

H.C.: As a country, we owe it to our seniors. It?s the right thing to do. It is unacceptable to leave a large segment of the population on their own at the most frail time of their lives. I also think we can make the case that cost savings can be achieved by keeping people living independently as long as possible instead of going to assisted-living or nursing home facilities.

Q. What about the suburbs?

H.C.: The baby boomers are the first American suburban generation. But the suburbs are the worst place to age because they?re so unwalkable and totally dependent on the automobile. Living in a cul de sac is really hard when you lose access to your car. So these communities have to think of new strategies.

Q. One of the authors in your book writes about his personal longevity plan. Do you have one?

H.C.: I turned 65 this year and I do have a plan that involves daily exercise and fitness. My personal role models are people who don?t think about retirement but have created either businesses or activities that will allow them to be active until the very end.

I will always be based in San Antonio. I live in my grandfather?s old house, which I refurbished, one mile away from where I grew up and one block away from our neighborhood church. When you give this much to a place it becomes part of you and there are a lot of things you don?t want to abandon.

Clinton encourages girls, women in Malawi visit

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met schoolgirls and Africa's second woman president during an unprecedented visit to Malawi Sunday before jetting to South Africa to visit Nelson Mandela.

On the fifth leg of a tour that has already taken her to troubled South Sudan and focused on the continent's security woes, Clinton chose to emphasise women's rights and education.

The first US chief diplomat to visit the southern African nation stopped at the Lilongwe Girls Secondary School in the capital after meeting with President Joyce Banda.

The diplomat was visibly moved when a girl wrapped a colourful gift around her -- an orange, blue and grey traditional African fabric locally known as chitenge.

Dozens of other girls welcomed Clinton with singing.

She then took time to shake hands with every woman at the school, where US volunteer group Peace Corps is holding a week-long camp for girls from across the country.

Clinton shared her mother's story as encouragement to the girls in a country where women's rights have been an upward battle, an issue which lay close to her heart.

"She overcame a sea of difficulties early in her life. She was abandoned by her parents and grandparents, abused and neglected," Clinton told her eager audience.

"You have the right to make your own choices about your future. So aim high, stand tall and be proud to be a woman in this time and in this country with so much promise," she said.

She looked forward to see young women leaders alongside young men on her next trip to Malawi, she said.

Clinton earlier on Sunday met with Banda, Africa's second woman leader after Liberia's Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, at her official residence State House where the two exchanged warm words.

"For a long time, we have been women and children activists. I have been waiting for the day when we would meet," Banda told Clinton as the two held hands.

She "encouraged President Banda to be a role model in Southern Africa for more democratic governance and also regional integration among the states of this region," said a State Department official who attended the meeting.

Clinton "commended the decisions of Banda's first 100 days" including a move to float the currency.

Malawi devalued the kwacha by nearly 34 percent against the US dollar in May, after it traded at double the official exchange on the black market and drove foreign currency from the banking system.

Clinton also warned the Malawi government against corruption, which she called a "hidden tax on the Malawi people".

During her last stop in the country at a milk cooperative she announced a $46 million (37 million euros) investment in agriculture over the next three years.

Milk production had increased by 500 percent over the last decade thanks to funds from the US, the impoverished nation's largest bilateral donor, she added.

As part of a marathon eleven-day Africa tour she flew later Sunday to South Africa, where she would meet with anti-apartheid icon and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nelson Mandela in the week.

A spokeswoman confirmed Clinton tagged visits to Nigeria and Benin onto the trip after South Africa. She is also expected in Ghana for the state funeral of late president John Atta Mills.

Banda, a former womens' right activits, was sworn in as president in April following the death of late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

Her rise to power was a victory in a nation where a gang stripped women in public in January for wearing trousers.

Banda swiftly set about restoring relations with foreign donors, who had suspended funds due to concerns about hardline governance and rights issues under Mutharika.

Her sister Anjimile Oponyo was hired by Madonna to run a school for girls the US pop star set up in Malawi, although that project collapsed and she was sacked.

In June the US said it would restore aid worth $350 million to Malawi's energy sector in light of Banda's "bold actions" to reform the government.

Animal movement is key to sea life

It's hard not to be moved by the magnificent sight of whales as they hoist their massive frames from the sea and then fall back into the waves with a mighty splash.

But all that splashing is just a fraction of a whale's journey, which is good for more than just show. Underneath the waves, nutrients such as nitrogen and iron are moved and mixed around the ocean by the beasts as they surface from hunting in the deep. Contrary to previous belief, whales and other marine animals may play a major role in the worldwide transport of nutrients ? from the cold, rich waters of the deep to the warm, nutrient-poor surface. Without these key ingredients, much marine life would cease to exist.

A study published in July in the journal Biogeosciences Discussions estimated that a mere 80 sperm whales that live near Hawaii transport 1,100 tons (1 million kilograms) of nitrogen per year with the movement of their massive bodies through a boundary called the pycnocline, below which it is too dark for light-loving plants ? the base of much of the ocean food chain ? to survive.

That may seem like an unimpressive amount, but if you take the movement of all the animals throughout the ocean, it can add up. A 2006 study by Florida State University researcher William Dewar calculated that animals and other organisms are responsible for one-third of the mixing of the ocean, without which the sea would stagnate and likely turn into a virtually lifeless soup within a few thousand years. [ World's Biggest Oceans and Seas ]

Powerful as the wind
If that number holds up, it would make marine animals as important as tides or winds in mixing the ocean, Dewar told OurAmazingPlanet. Scientists had previously thought that only tides and winds moved nutrients around, but more and more evidence suggests life plays a role in shuttling nutrients to keep the system functioning.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Scientists reveal recipe for tall sandcastles

Just in time for the dog days of summer, scientists have revealed the winning formula for sturdy, sky-piercing sandcastles. The secret ingredient is a dash of water.

    2. Secret to elephants' thundering calls
    3. Why do men live shorter lives?
    4. How Earth's 'hums' could predict quakes

The two most important elements, which are abundant in the deep but limited higher up, are nitrogen and iron, which plants need to convert solar energy into energy-rich chemicals like carbohydrates that fuel higher forms of life.

Big animals such as whales can transport nutrients with the turbulent wakes created by their movement. But smaller animals like krill likely can move things around too, especially when they move in groups in a uniform "mat," moving down hundreds of feet or meters during the day, and back up again at night.

Groups of krill in the Southern Ocean form perhaps the largest migrating body of animals in the world, said Stephen Nicol, a marine biologist at Australia's University of Tasmania, who wasn't involved in either study. They can move nutrients with wakes from their tiny appendages, but also create a collective updraft (similar to the way a sheet of falling raindrops creates a down-draft), sucking up nutrients.

Animals also make their movements constantly on a daily basis, compared with winds and tides, which often exert most of their influence in large events like storms that occur less frequently.

Efficient mixers
Even tiny animals such as grass shrimp are very efficient mixers, said physical oceanographer Claudia Cenedese at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. In one study she conducted, a small number of the creatures completely mixed up a large tank filled with separate layers of nutrients in two to three days; that's about 100 times quicker than the solution would have mixed on its own via convection and diffusion. (Convection is a pattern of circulation caused by heat; diffusion is the natural process where chemicals spread out from high to low concentrations.)

Animals such as jellyfish may also suck up water with them as they go, pulling it into their bodies as they propel themselves.

Tiny plants like phytoplankton, which form the basis of the marine food chain, can only survive near the ocean's surface where light penetrates. When they die, these organisms quickly sink to the bottom of the ocean, taking the nutrients they possess with them. So the ocean needs mixing to survive.

Dewar's 2006 paper, published in the Journal of Marine Research, calculated that worldwide, mixing of the ocean requires 3 terawatts (TW) of power (about one-fifth of the electrical power used by humans each year). Winds, tidal forces and the biosphere contribute about 1 TW of the needed power. These are, however, energetic estimates one step removed from the real world, Dewar said. And that's the problem: in this nascent field, there are few hard numbers to rely upon.

"A lot more work needs to be done to prove this," Nicol said. The growing likelihood that life plays an important role in transporting nutrients doesn't greatly surprise most biologists, he said. "But physical and chemical oceanographers don't like the idea at all and are deeply suspicious of it."

Physical oceanographer Andre Visser of the Technical University of Denmark said he thinks that small animals do not mix the ocean significantly, because they are too small. (He also added that the whale study, whose authors could not be reached for comment, was flawed and not well-explained.) Large animals such as whales may mix the ocean, he said, but there are too few left to make a big difference. [ In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales ]

The nutrient loop
However, Visser said, they probably do play an important role in transporting nutrients in their bodies. Sperm whales, for example, are a classic case ? they feed on fish and squid in the deep ocean, and then come to the surface and enrich it with large plumes of nitrogen- and iron-rich floating feces.

Nicol's research on blue whales and fin whales, which feed on krill, has shown the same thing. The fecal nutrients are quickly taken up by blooms of phytoplankton, he said, which are then eaten by krill, ?functioning like a "living reservoir of iron." More krill means more whales, meaning more nutrients for plankton, which is eaten by krill. And so on.

The contribution of animals to ocean mixing is harder to notice than waves and the movements of the tides, Cenedese said. There also are far fewer whales than there used to be, which has led to less nutrient transport and less-populated oceans, Nicol said.

The idea that animals enhance the movement of nutrients, and help provide more food for the whole ecosystem in a positive feedback loop, is a powerful one with large implications, Nicol said. And it's probably accurate, Visser added.

For one, it would change how scientists formulate models of global climate, ocean circulation, etc. ? none of which currently account for animals' roles in these processes, Visser said.

It also would provide more evidence for why it's important to preserve large animals such as whales.

How big a role organisms play in the process is impossible to say for now, though, due to the difficulty of making these measurements in the vast ocean and knowing how to average out differences between different locations.

"I can't speculate," said another researcher who has studied the issue of how much animals contribute to ocean mixing, Caltech's John Dabiri said. "It literally depends on how many fish are in the sea."

Obama, Romney look for advantage in jobs numbers

Graphic compares the unemployment rate trends for eight battleground states to the national average

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is bracing for another potential dose of lackluster economic news while Republican challenger Mitt Romney readies to take advantage of any weakness in the monthly jobs report.

The new unemployment numbers, due Friday morning from the Labor Department, will paint a fresh picture of the U.S. economy three months before Election Day. The closely watched report will also help set the tone for the next phase in the battle for the White House as the candidates race toward their party conventions and a fall campaign blitz.

In an unshakably static campaign, Obama and Romney will each seek to spin the report to their advantage.

The nationwide unemployment rate stands at 8.2 percent. That's down from a peak under Obama of 10.1 percent in 2009, but it's far too high for an economy trying to break out of the doldrums.

Another dour report would provide fresh fodder for the central premise of Romney's campaign: Obama's economic policies have failed and Romney's experience as a successful businessman would help him put the country on a clearer path to growth and job creation.

Obama, short of a disastrous report, will continue making his case to voters that the economy is slowly but surely recovering and would be doing better if congressional Republicans would pass his economic proposals.

Obama was expected to comment on the jobs numbers during a White House event focused on middle-class tax cuts. Romney was campaigning Friday in Nevada, a battleground state with the nation's highest unemployment rates, before moving on to a fundraiser in Idaho.

The candidates sparred from afar on the economy Thursday. Romney, campaigning in Colorado, said his economic program would create 12 million jobs in the next four years. Obama told voters in Florida that his rival favors "trickle-down tax cut fairy dust" that has failed to fix the economy in the past.

Romney's plan for job growth included several broad ideas but few specifics. He said he would help small business owners, cut spending to reduce the deficit and cut taxes.

Obama sought this week to draw a contrast with Romney on taxes, saying the Republican's call for extending cuts for upper-income earners would mean higher tax bills for the middle class. The president's new television ad made the case with a highly personalized message: Romney has paid a lower proportion of his income in taxes than many people of lesser means.

Obama planned to hammer his tax message again on Friday by calling on Congress to extend tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year before those cuts expire at the end of the year. The president wants to end the tax cuts, first enacted under President George W. Bush, for families making more than $250,000.

While the overall race for the White House remains deadlocked, several polls show Romney with an advantage over Obama on economic issues. A USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted in late July found 50 percent of Americans said Romney is the candidate who would be better at job creation, with 44 percent siding with Obama.

Economists set modest expectations for Friday's jobs report. They expected the economy to have generated just 100,000 jobs last month, which would likely keep the unemployment rate at 8.2 percent.

The trajectory of late hasn't given the Obama White House anything to celebrate.

The American economy grew at a listless 1.5 percent annual pace from April through June, even slower than the 2 percent rate in the first three months of the year.

The economy added only 80,000 jobs in June, erasing any doubt that the United States is in a summer slump for the third year in a row. From April through June, the economy produced an average of just 75,000 jobs a month, the weakest three months since August through October 2010.

The slide comes after the optimism of early 2012, when the first three months of job growth averaged more than 225,000 a month.
